On a belated note, the recent death of  81 year old country music icon Glen Campbell who had been struggling with dementia (specifically Alzheimer’s Disease)is a pivotal moment for him who wanted to leave a mark in this world and to say goodbye in his own way. He did it his way and I applaud him for that. He was able to do it while his mental faculties were still intact at that time and savoring every moment of it with the support of  his family, friends and fans.

I could see him now with his big white horse, wearing his studded cowboy outfit(rhinestones of course) and riding towards the heavens with the musical backdrop of his great hit—Rhinestone Cowboy.

Jerry Lewis, comedy icon and philanthropist/fund-raiser for the National Muscular Dystrophy Foundation had died yesterday at age 91 after a brief illness.

May you rest in peace and as your ending song after each MD fundraiser states, You Will Never Walk Alone as the angels escort you to the Pearly Gates. I’m sure your comedy team partner Dean Martin will be waiting for you up there to greet you a warm welcome.

When I heard today that Sir Roger Moore had passed away after a short time, bravely battling cancer, I felt sad since I had always enjoyed watching him  in the movies portraying the suave British spy James Bond,Agent 007 as well as the crime-fighting tycoon Simon Templar in the TV series The Saint. He had a massive movie and theatre career but definitely the 2 aforementioned roles were his most famous ones.

He had been  more involved now with UNICEF, being a high-profile United Nations representative for children’s causes worldwide. This was one role that he relished the most until the end of his life.

Him being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II is like a cherry on a big cake. If this were part of a movie story line, it would appear as if the Queen had just knighted James Bond,Agent 007 who always serves at the pleasure of his Royal Highness.

Though I don’t drink liquor, much less a martini like James Bond, to Sir Roger, I salute you with my non-alcoholic drink, shaken, not stirred as you’d like it.

Salut!

With all that has been going on in this world  regarding terrorism, the fact that this time, in Manchester UK, it involved  a terrorist attack, bombing a concert by a popular American pop singer(Ariana Grande) who’s providing  good entertainment to a group of young people (teenagers, tweens) has sent chills and sadness to me.

A suicide bomber did his job and left  indescribable heartbreak to families and loved ones of the very young  victims whether they’re dead, injured or missing.

Second-guessing as to how to improve security in any public event will always come up. Unfortunately, we all learn by hindsight. It goes to show that nothing’s safe anymore.

I  feel sorry for Miss Grande who surely must be feeling distraught that her fans came to see her , only to later on meet their respective fates. I hope that this  awful experience will not prevent her from performing ever again but to use this very moment  to find new purpose in performing for her fans.

My thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by this awful tragedy.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry aka Chuck Berry was born in St. Louis,Missouri on Oct. 18,1926. I heard the news of his death  which happened yesterday  in St. Louis as well. He was 90 years old.

Having read all the articles regarding him, I will give my own input as well about this man who’s considered the Father of Rock and Roll, an original Rock and Roll legend, in fact, was the first inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

His musical repertoire reflected his views on happiness and rebellion. He was able to use his great songwriting skills to tell stories that happen in  society —- for example—“Sweet Little Sixteen”(about young female fans called groupies), “School Day“(about daily school routines and trials and tribulations),”Back in the U.S.“(black man’s tribute to his country–the USA) ,”Johnny  B. Goode“(aspiring country guitar player being encouraged by his mom to pursue his dream to be a star).

The Johnny B. Goode song  became an anthem for every aspiring musician who dreams to hit the big time. It was also Chuck Berry’s signature song.

The song”Rock and Roll Music” became the guide song for all future rock bands to follow.

Even his gifted guitar skills have inspired known rock guitarists like George Harrison,Keith Richards and Eric Clapton for example.

He was able to combine both country fast beat and rhythm in blues song to produce the rock and roll music beat that we know now.

He was also an amazing live performer and would use his”bent-leg duck” walk from time to time while playing his guitar. on stage.

He was also known for his brushes with the law as well as his many extramarital liaisons  yet he was able only to serve just part of his time in jail and the rest were either dismissed ,commuted or pardoned. He remained married to his wife Themetta Suggs who stayed by his side up to his death.

His fame had been stratospheric and one example would be the launching of the unmanned Voyager in 1977 by NASA and inside that rocket was stored a music album containing a musical playlist which included  only 1 rock song—Johnny B. Goode. The purpose of that musical album was to explain to any potential extraterrestials that the Voyager may encounter as to what kind of music is being played on the planet Earth.

On his 90th birthday last year, he announced that he would be releasing his musical album first new in 38 years on 2017,titled “Chuck”. This would be a compilation of his new, original songs which were written, recorded and produced by him.

He reflected that he may be nearing the end of his life ,thus the end of his musical career and felt that it’ll be the time to hang up his boots.

It should be pointed out that he never stopped performing even when he got on in years. It probably kept him feeling young and strong because music playing and songwriting was what kept him busy and which he loved doing so.

He may be gone now but his music will live on. For me personally, all I need to do is just go on Youtube and watch Michael J. Fox sing Johnny B. Goode on 1 Back to the Future clip. I could even shake a leg and hip to its catchy beat too!

With the recent passing of the greatest boxing icon Muhammad Ali, his being called “The Greatest” doesn’t only pertain to boxing but also to his humanitarian work.

His overall persona touches everyone and would leave an indelible mark in both their hearts and minds of The Greatest One.

His bigger than life personality, tenacity and fortitude to follow and work towards attaining his dreams and goals in life had been very inspiring for all.

His biggest and final opponent in life was his ongoing bout with Parkinson’s Disease, an aftermath from his pugilistic career. His bravery, fortitude and perseverance in fighting this through was very heartwarming.

In my opinion, he boxed through the entire 15 rounds of the rest of his mortal life versus Parkinson’s Disease, still standing and in fighting form, not knocked out as per boxing jargon.

He left  this world because of an apparent septic infection secondary to unknown natural causes, not due to Parkinson’s Disease.

The Supreme Being above had called him to come home to the heavens already and not go for a possible round 16 if there ever was one in the boxing ring at all. Time to hang up the boxing gloves.

Though he left all of us here in this world, he will never be forgotten and his legacy as a great human being which encompasses not only his history in boxing but also his history in helping mankind in everyday life’s struggles will be hard to match but emulated ,not only by us but also with future generations.

To the Greatest One, I could hear the signature songs of Rocky Balboa  as well as that other song “We Are The Champions” playing in my ears.

Rest in Peace, Champ!

When I got the news that Leonard Nimoy aka Mr. Spock of Star Trek TV fame had passed away yesterday(February 27,2015) at 83 years of age due to the effects of COPD(chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), I felt sad.  Spock’s character had touched the hearts of us humans probably because of his being half-human and half-Vulcan ancestry. His empathy of the human condition makes us assess ourselves in our  own place in this world.

Mr. Nimoy is a multitalented individual, having been involved in acting, directing(for ex., the movie 3 Men and a Baby) ,movie producing, writing books and doing charity work.

One of his final tweets is in my opinion quite memorable….A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had but not preserved except in memory. LLAP(Long Live And Prosper).

You will be preserved in both everyone’s hearts and memories. With your famous Star Trek hand and finger salute(aka Vulcan salute), LLAP to you as well!

I could just imagine your dear friend Scotty also of Star Trek fame who went ahead of you to the pearly gates, to be already beaming you up to join him.

What a sight that would be!!!

Robin Williams, a very famous  American comedian extraordinaire with a versatile flair of going and switching through different acting genres(drama, comedy, musical, standup, etc) had died at the age of 63 in his California home on August 11,2014. Cause of death as determined by the coroner was asphyxiation secondary to hanging from his bedroom door with a necktie.

Such a man who spreads laughter and fun to his audience was actually crying inside his heart. It appears  that it was his way of dealing with his problems by not letting anyone into his musings and blocking it out by exhibiting comedic overtures. Such a maneuver can make false impressions that even a naïve bystander think that he’s just joking and a good friend thinking that he’s dealing with his problems quite well. Also bear in mind that he was also a very good actor so his portrayal of  general appearances can potentially be misleading as well.

The reality of depression is often dismissed or downplayed for fear of social stigma since it’s a mental health problem. It’s actually a real medical problem which is a brain disease but definitely on an abstract level which requires observation, inference and intervention. When this is done, it will prevent utter tragedy since suicide is the ultimate result if the depression isn’t handled well nor promptly.

I hope that Robin Williams’ plight will bring into focus the reality of depression and substance abuse which is also a coping mechanism to deal with depression.

In spite of his constant seeking of treatment for his problems, I guess that his depression was so severe that the emotional pain became so unbearable for him that he took his own life to end his emotional suffering once and for all.

R.I.P. Robin Williams! You took our  human hearts by greeting us Nanu-nanu as Mork, the lovable alien. You’re now free like your  Disney character Aladdin’s genie from the bottle and now perching up there with the stars in the galaxy. Knock them dead up there with your comedic flair.

You will be missed and never forgotten!

For all the years that I had been living in Canada, I had been told that a typical Canuck is usually obsessed with Canada’s national sport which is hockey. Some say that it’s almost like a religion.Such a belief has been ingrained since childhood, I believe.

With the recent Sochi Olympics and the fantastic job of both Team Canada’s men and women’s hockey teams in bringing both gold medals home, it only reinforces Canada’s reputation as the mother country of hockey, the Holy Grail in a way.

The televised footages of die-hard hockey fans especially yesterday’s Canada’s  men’s hockey team’s gold medal finals with Sweden had been a revelation for me. Whether you’re watching them on TV or on Youtube, twitter, etc., it’s pretty amazing to see the lengths of how these fans will go the extra mile to watch a very important hockey final where national pride and reputation is at stake.

Since it was  a Sunday yesterday, church attendance was reportedly sparse during the hours of the highly anticipated  mens hockey gold medal game. Most of the pubs, bars and restaurants with big flat-screen TVs had been opened as early as 7 am(depending on your local time zone–which means that in the Pacific West Coast,it’s probably a few hours after midnight),offering liquor especially beer and a good meal…indeed, the Canadian way to enjoy  watching a good hockey game.

Most of the fans would either take a few hours of sleep or not sleep at all to adjust themselves in watching the game either at home or at the pub in the early hours of the morning, considering that Russian time is different from North American time. They strongly believe that watching the game is their way of supporting their hockey players. The  Canadian women’s hockey gold medal game with the US women’s hockey team  was held last Thursday but at least in the afternoon–Canadian time.

For these Canucks, winning an Olympic gold hockey medal is a mark of success and pride. Singing the national anthem O’Canada is like a cherry on top of the icing of a cake.

Go Canada Go!

Cory Monteith, a 31 year old boyish-looking guy who hit big-time stardom by playing singing quarterback Finn Hudson on the hit TV series “Glee’ had died on July 13,2013 in his hotel room in downtown Vancouver,Canada.

Known to be laid-back, humble and a good-natured guy inspite of his fame, the Canadian-born native had been vocally outspoken of his ongoing battles with substance abuse since age 13 and repeated stints with rehab, the last one on April 2013.

He was often described as a triple threat—great actor, singer and dancer and as the “next Hugh Jackman” who recently received an Oscar nomination for his role in the musicale film Les Miserables.

Cory had a great showbiz career with great expectations of being a much greater entertainer in the coming years but which was sadly aborted by his untimely death. An autopsy is to be done today to look into probable cause of death.

Cory also had a loving and supportive family and girlfriend, Glee co-star Lea Michele.

My heart goes out to all of them in this very sad moment.

Cory, life had been short for you. If your departure from this world is by means of your untimely death, then it’s your final act.

If you were only given a chance to sing one last time, that would have been one heck of a memorable swan song.

Thanks for entertaining us with your great voice! I’m sure that the angels from above are joining you in chorus right now.

Rest in piece!
